The 809 Area Code Scam & Hoax: At one time, there was a pretty prominent scam associated with area code 809. What happened was people would receive a message on their answering machines to call back a number in the area code 809 area. When they called the number (often thinking it was a toll-free 800 number), they were billed large, long-distance rates. Although this scam did exist, it took on a much larger role in pop culture due to a number of email hoaxes and urban legends.
